Phone to make an appointment prior to visiting City housing offices

15 July 2021

The City of Cape Town’s Public Housing offices are open to members of the public and are operating during their respective normal working hours. Covid-19 related health and safety precautions are in place and tenants are encouraged to phone ahead and make an appointment prior to visiting a housing office to prevent having to queue outside. Only a limited number of people may be allowed inside of a housing office at the same time. Tenants are encouraged to also make use of the available and convenient service request channels as well as the online payment options. The Human Settlements Directorate has a call centre and WhatsApp number that customers may use for assistance.

All health and safety protocols are in place and are adhered to at all times, for the safety of members of the public and City staff.

‘We ask residents to please make their appointments with their nearest housing office beforehand and to only visit for urgent business. Our offices are subject to rapid closures due to Covid-19 infections and in line with the Covid-19 regulations when required. To ensure that we receive and process all enquiries and maintenance related matters, our offices have placed comment boxes at the entrances so that tenants may submit their requests, including maintenance service matters to the City to follow up on, inside and outside of office hours.

‘Our Public Housing Department continues to experience repair work backlogs, primarily due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and we are trying our best to work through it as soon as possible. We encourage tenants to follow up for their required maintenance and to remember to please get a reference number so that they can track the status and progress of their service requests.

‘Tenants who are in financial difficulties must also approach us for assistance as the City makes allowance for residents who are unable to pay to apply to the City for relief. We advise struggling tenants to make an appointment to visit their local housing office so that they can enter into a satisfactory arrangement to pay off their arrears. There are also tenants who qualify for the City’s R4,1 billion debt write-off incentive of historic debt. There is help on offer, but tenants must contact the City to see if they qualify for the number of initiatives that are available to assist them,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.
